A felszín alatti térrész integrált hasznosítását célzó nemzetek közötti együttműködésre hívta életre az EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) a GeoERA projektet.
Az Európai Unió számos olyan kihívással néz szembe, ami szorosan kapcsolódik a felszín alatt található földtani erőforrásokhoz. Egyrészről szükség van a gazdasági növekedés ösztönzésére, amelynek a nyersanyag előfordulások kitermelése és hasznosítása központi eleme, másrészről igény van egy egészséges és biztonságos környezet biztosítására az állampolgárok számára. Mindemellett a növekvő népesség és a demográfiai változások is hozzájárulnak a területhasználat fokozódásához a felszínen és a felszín alatt egyaránt. Mindezek együttesen egyre fokozódó nyomást gyakorolnak a természeti erőforrások hozzáférhetőségére és használatára, az energiahordozó- és az egyéb nyersanyagok, valamint a felszín alatti vizek vonatkozásában.
A GeoERA egy 2017. januárban, az Európai Földtani Szolgálatok Kutatási Térségének létrehozására indított H2020-as ERA-NET típusú projekt, ami támogatja a kutatók, valamint a tudás és technológiák szabad áramlását, és összehangolja a nemzeti földtudományi kutatási programokat. A GeoERA-n belül 33 országból 48 nemzeti és regionális Földtani Szolgálat egyesítette erőit 15 nemzetközi kutatási projekt megvalósítására.
A 30 millió összköltségvetésű projekt-csoport eredménye egy objektív, kölcsönösen átjárható, harmonizált adatokból, információkból és szakértői vizsgálatokból álló földtani tudásbázis lesz, aminek célja, hogy kiszolgálja az európai, nemzeti és regionális döntéshozókat, az ipart és az egyéb résztvevőket, valamint hogy támogassa a szakpolitikai döntéshozatali folyamatokat. Az összes eredményt az Európai Földtani Adatkezelő Infrastruktúrán (European Geological Data Infrastructure, EGDI) teszik közzé.

The GeoConnect³d project develops a new approach to disclose geological information for policy support and subsurface management. It starts from two regional case studies – the Roer-to-Rhine region and the Pannonian Basin – that form the input for evaluating potentially interacting subsurface activities. Valorisation at pan-European level is ensured by applying the methods in two pilot areas in Germany and Ireland.

RESOURCE will demonstrate the potentials of the harmonization of information about Europe’s groundwater resources through cross-border demonstrations projects, through harmonized characterization approaches for Karst and Chalk aquifers and through a first information product at Pan-European scale where available data is compiled and integrated to produce a map of the fresh groundwater resources of Europe.

Climate change impact assessments often ignores the crucial role groundwater plays in the freshwater cycle. Utilising geological data and knowledge from EU geological surveys, TACTIC will improve climate change impact assessments and adaptation, and develop an infrastructure for harmonisation of data, methods and results.

This project will investigate the relationship between industrial activity (including geothermal energy, unconventional oil and gas exploitation, sub-surface storage and disposal of wastes) in the deep subsurface, and shallow groundwater resources at four pilot sites across Europe. It will use this evidence to develop an approach to evaluating groundwater vulnerability and to improve awareness of these issues with decision makers and the public to aid better sub-surface spatial planning and policy development.
